History

Stories on the history and origin of Kunafa are many. However, the most famous one says that Kunafa made its way to the Levant through the Turkish Ottomans. The Palestinians then became renowned for their Kunafa, especially the people of Nablus who added the touch of Nabulsi cheese to it. That is when the famous Kunafa Nabulsi was born. The Palestinians tastefully added the garnish of crushed pistachios, ghee and sugar syrup to it which is how it is eaten today.

Kunafa is a key player on the Ramadan dessert table. They say that Kunafa was the favorite Suhoor meal for Mouawiyah bin Abi Sufian when he ruled Damascus (Sham) to help him keep full while fasting during the month of Ramadan.
